You will remember what your father forgot - Tony.
And that, my friends, is all that remains of my original blog entry.
I published my finished-blog for this earlier today, and then - as usually happens with blogger - noticed the spacing/ formatting came out completely (and inexplicably) differently than how it looked in edit-mode. So, I went in to tidy things up, somehow hit "revert to draft," then as I tried to ctrl-Z backwards, it erased the entire blog, then auto-saved before I could do anything else.
I tried a bunch of different things to recover it, but to no avail. Seems to be gone forever. After whimpering helplessly for about twenty minutes, (the horror of all those hours of work receding into oblivion was perhaps the worst, though replacing that hard-won sense of "job well done"ness with the blank-screen of blogger-glitch was a close second) I posted a s.o.s. to the Google Groups board; maybe someone can tell me how to find it.
If so, well, see you then. But, to hang all my hopes on that is too much, so I'm just going to move on.
Rather than attempt to re-create it - because I think the attempt would be so discouraging that I'd give up the entire King's Highway project altogether - I can only say... well, I guess the Overlook got this one. Subsumed into the unholy terror of Room 217, or something. Add "King's Highway pt. 49" to the scrapbook in the boiler room.
(If it was the film, I'd say "Add me to the picture of the July 4th Ball at the end," but since that doesn't appear in the novel, it wouldn't be jake to mention here.)
I thought about trying to piece it all back together from my notes, but... it's just too much. Not only time-wise, but emotional-investment-wise. Also, I rarely keep my handwritten notes once I start saving the blog-in-question to Blogger, so I don't even have the particular passages from the text that I marked as noteworthy, nor my general outline. Too bad.
Here's a laundry list of what I remember, but it of course is not the same: I wrote about child abuse, cultural-colonization of adult over child a la Inventing the Child by Zornado, Disney, and Grimm's Fairy Tales, the Torrance family drama as classic dark mythology/ perfect symbolic representation of America in the 20th century, and what I considered a pretty good argument for The Shining as King's best novel. I talked briefly on the forthcoming Doctor Sleep and King's relationship with the book, then and now, how he psychoanalyzes himself and externalizes his fears in print, what it means to tell this tale when you're a young man with small children vs. as a grandfather with his own boiler-in-the-basement well-tempered and trials endured/ bested.
I focused only on the novel. The film will be next time; that one is still saved, thankfully, just got to finish it. If that one gets erased, I will take this as proof of the hotel not wanting me to write about it. Anyway, I didn't like how every review of the book I read mentioned the film. Understandable, of course, but I wanted to write one focusing only on the book.
Anyway, the labels - slim as they are - still exist from the lost version, and here now are the pics I used, robbed of context and caption, but as a mysterious road-map to a world taken unfairly from us. Look at them as the King's Highway equivalent "Croatoan" written in the trees. RIP, entry 49, Lost At Sea.

Hey, I've been there. Not here on Blogger, specifically, but I've had plenty of weighty missives containing some of my best turns-of-phrase vanish into the electronic aether because I hit the wrong key at the wrong time, or the computer decided to crash at exactly the time it could do the most damage, or...well, you get the idea. I always shake my fist at the sky and vow to the gods that I will always write it out on Notepad or Word the next time, but that lasts only until the first thirteen times that the formatting of the cut & paste job looks like garbage and I sigh and resign myself to the whims of the internet.
ReplyDelete"that lasts only until the first thirteen times that the formatting of the cut & paste job looks like garbage and I sigh and resign myself to the whims of the internet."
DeleteYep.
That happened to me once. A great deal of profanity ensued; I'm still a little surprised my neighbors didn't call the cops on me, to be honest. Good news if I ever need to loudly murder someone, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteSince then, I've been fairly obsessive about keeping Word open while I'm blogging, and every time I come to a natural stopping place, I copy what I've written from Blogger into a word document. Then I save the hell out of it, just in case the world decides to try and turk me again.
And now, a confession: I'm trying to type this comment while Bob Dylan's Christmas album is playing in the background. I'm amazed I'm forming sentences, but I seem to be doing just that. Must be Santa, must be Santa, must be Santa, Santa Claus!
Silver bay-ells.... silver bay-ells...
DeleteI should be taking more precautions than I am. Hopefully I'll do so from here on out and not get complacent!
Awwwwww, MAN!
ReplyDeleteThat's way too bad. Real sorry for the loss. Here's keeping ome kind of fingers crossed it'll turn up. It looks like it could have been real promising. I especially liked how you characterize the novel as a sort of dark mythology of twentieth century American history. My word for it was "The Junkie side of American History, which sounds like something Hunter S. Thompson might write but it just sounded apt. Alsoliked how you mention King analyzes himself in his novels.
The only thing I'd add to what I can see is that I think ever since the auto accident, King has still been trying to work through the aftermath of those events as I write this, o yeah, maybe he's back to dealing with the basement boiler again.
That was just my thought.

I'll tell you what.
DeleteSince this entry didn't go according to Hoyle, how about this idea by way of compensation?
I was hoping to sum up once and for all my take on Doctor Sleep, only the thing turned into a nine page semi-essay.
If you can give me time, I'll try and have it finished by tomorrow, or today if that's when you're reading this?
Make up you're own mind on this score, I'm not about to try and convince anyone of anything.

Thanks, Chris. I appreciate any and all condolences. Still grumbling about losing this one. (Why the hell couldn't Blogger lose my blog for The Talisman or something!)
DeleteI recall reading your Doctor Sleep thoughts (or some of them) at Truth Inside the Lie. (or at Honk Mahfah - whichever it was at the time I read them). Feel free to reproduce them here or any version of them. I'll be working on my Shining (film and mini-series) blog so if I don't respond for a spell, please don't ascribe any meaning to my delay.
Just got reply, thanks.
DeleteThere is just one more question.
Is Doctor Sleep going to merit an entry all it's own, was this supposed to be it? If not, and a Sleep entry is in the works, well I'm wondering if the post shouldn't be made there instead of here.
ChrisC
Oh, I will definitely cover Doctor Sleep when it comes out. Tho, I just realized, doing a little math, I may be too sleep-deprived to cover it properly immediately upon its release, My wife and I are expecting, and our baby girl will be just about six months when it comes out (Sept 2013) so I'll likely be too knackered to even read it, much less review/blog it properly, ha. I'll need the REAL Doctor Sleep, at that point, if she's not sleeping through the night.
DeleteIt'll be interesting to read. I hope it serves as an Odyssey to the original's Iliad rather than a Closing Time to the original's Catch-22.
(Actually, I remember kind of liking Closing Time, but I felt it was an unequal follow-up to such a classic as Catch-22. I feel similarly about The Shining's place in King's catalog. But, I do look forward to reading it to see for myself.)
Okay then, here goes. The following converted word link is an essay intended to be my final statement regarding my thoughts on Stephen King's upcoming Doctor Sleep.
ReplyDeleteIt's a copy and paste into search engine deal, then just hit enter.
I hope this works.

No luck, I'm afraid... on my end, anyway. If you care to send it to my email youarenumbersix-at-gmail-dot-com, please do.
